What do they say when you're not in the room?

There's a simple test for whether your marketing is working: are people talking about you when you're not in the room?

Not engaging with your content. Not clicking your ads. Talking about you. To their friends. At dinner. In a WhatsApp group. In that specific, unprompted way that means something genuinely landed.

Most marketing gets scrolled past. It's seen - technically - but it doesn't register. It doesn't create a story worth retelling. It doesn't give someone a reason to turn to the person next to them and say 'have you seen what this brand did?'

The marketing that gets talked about almost always has one thing in common: it happened somewhere real. It was an experience, not a message. It was a moment people were part of, not a piece of content they consumed.

When someone experiences your brand - at a live event, through a collaboration, in a cultural moment -

they don't just remember it. They own it. It becomes their story. 'I was there when...' is the most powerful sentence in marketing because it turns a consumer into a storyteller.

And storytellers are worth more than any media buy. A single person telling a genuine story about your brand to five friends has more impact than reaching 50,000 people who'll scroll past your ad.

The question worth asking isn't 'how many people will see this?' It's 'how many people will talk about this?' The answers to those two questions are almost never the same — and the second one is the one that matters.

Build for conversations, not impressions. The rest follows.
